1977 Kopke St Luiz.

Decanted the night before (c2300, I believe) this looked quite promising. Albeit somewhat lighter than I expected, it was completely clear and was quite promising on the nose. Nineteen hours later it was dead: cloudy and barely drinkable. A real shame as it would have been nice to compare it to the 1970. Apologies

Interestingly, the cork was stamped ‟PORTO / VINTAGE / 1977” in three lines, vertically down the cork, whereas the 1970 was marked St Luiz and had the Kopke logo.

For the record, half the bottle is available for future consumption on a shelf at TCP

I guess this should have been drunk much sooner after decanting? A pity.

Yes; I think it would have been fine had it been drunk on decanting.

Kpoke. Slightly cloudy appearance; dark orange centre with a yellow / green rim. Subdued and muddy nose. Musty flavours in the mouth, tasting dusty and muddy. Some tart lime, offset by white sugar sweetness. The aftertaste is initially short and sour, but does come back improved and lasts a while. Probably a poor bottle. Not rated. Drunk 26 August 2009.

My TN on the night was just the one word ‟foul”.

Six months later, when the half bottle was recovered from the shelf, it was simple and sweet but drinkably harmless.
