1977 Smith Woodhouse vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Very deep red, still opaque and intensely coloured on the rim , despite being 32 years old. Full of sweet and perfumed blackcurrants on the nose, inviting and luscious. Quite dry on entry, restrained but massively fruity. A huge wine, with an astonishing tannic backbone, but the volume of fruit to pull this off. Wonderful complexity, showing more flavours and more subtleties the longer you can resist swallowing. But when you do finally swallow there is an explosion of favour absolutely dominates the mouth and which fades very slowly over the next 2 minutes. A mouthfilling wine that is still 20 years away from maturity - astonishing. 92/100. Drunk 25 September 2009 after 48 hours' decanting.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Hi Alex,

Smith Woodhouse and Gould Campell 1977 (!!! as good as Smith Woodhouse!!!) are my favourite Ports from 1977. After haveing made similar experiences with Smith Woodhouse I stopped opening bts of this Port. Naturarily Grahams, Dow and Fonseca are also very good, but those two are in the same league in the 1977 vintage (IMHO). ;-)))

Enjoy the rest of the bt.

regards

Wolfgang
