Decanted at 2:15pm
+0 Pink Port! I mean, pale red, with a spirity nose and a spirity taste. There's some fruit in the center of that taste, but it needs time in the decanter. here's hoping the 6-7 hours will do it good.

+6. Spirity, with a nose that strikes me as musty and even a little off. The spirits have blown off substantially since it was opened, but still too strong and lacking fruit. In the mouth there's misc. red fruits, and its very hot, maybe it needs more time for underlying flavors to evolve but it's pretty mediocre right now. 86

Sounds like a lackluster showing. Had had this vintage many times in bottle and magnum format. Probably the last great Sandeman until '94.

That doesn't bode well for our plan to hold a sandeman vertical...

Our vertical is currently 1960-1977 isn't it? So we're not off by much... I think we'll be fine. Though that would make me lean more toward adding a '55 than an '85 if we want the vertical to be larger.

i lost the bid on the sandeman 55 by 120$ (on a 200$ bid)... sooooo ... unless we can find it somewhere else retail =)

Unfortunately I see only 4 listings, all in the UK. I'd be willing to pay the ~$250 listed, but getting across the pond makes it too complicated.

The Sandeman 77 is supposed to be good as well (suckling recently gave it 91 points). I would definitely go for the 55 instead of 85. The 85 has a high chance of being spoilt by VA, while I remember the 55 to be a wonderful mature port.

1980 was their last good vintage until 1994. All of their vintages through the 50's have been good. I have a couple of '70 magnums and had a few of '80; both were great. Sandeman lost their way on vintage. From '27 to '70 almost all their vintages were good (had probably 2/3's of their releases in that time frame).

If I were to do a Sandeman vertical, I'd cut if off at 1970 unless it was a casual vertical.
