1991 Morgan's Vintage Port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

A bottle from the Morgan cellar clearance, via Christie's and Uncle Tom.

After 1 hour in the decanter the wine was a deep red with dark centre and a mahogany rim - surprisingly developed colour. The nose was of dusty blackberries. In the mouth the first impression was dusty / fusty sweetness but then layers of sweet fruit came through in the mid-palate with a nice structure around some vaguely peppery (in a nice way) soft tannins. The alcohol protruded a little too much. The aftertaste was nothing at first but then gradually became noticeable and stayed around for a long time as a chocolately / fruity residue. An enjoyable wine without being anything stellar. 5/5 or 88/100.

After 2½ hours in the decanter there was less on the nose, more alcohol on the mid palate and a burn on swallowing that was not noticeable when the first TN was taken. The same wonderful aftertaste was certainly still present.

After 7 hours in the decanter the nose had changed to reveal more fruit and less dustiness. The alcohol was fully integrated in the wine and the structure was provided by the acidity that was present. Sadly, the aftertaste had started to disappear.

After 13 hours the alcohol was back and was too aggressive for my liking. The aftertaste was also missing. On an overall performance, I would rate this bottle as 4/4 rather than the 5/5 it deserved at its best showing.
