2007 Quinta do Portal

2007 Portal Vintage Port
Tasted at Quinta do Portal, with Paulo Coutinho (2/12/2009), and retasted that same night.
At the tasting at Portal this young vintage was closed and unforgiving. An odd nose of sulphur and mainly showing tannin. Luckily, we were given the bottle in order to give it another shot that evening. It was much better. Still somewhat closed, but at least there is some fruit on the nose now. It is beautifully structured, with ripe, fierce tannins and a great core of fresh dark fruit. It is accessible and elegant, but by no means simple. It has the stuffing and length to guarantee long term ageing. Impressive, and surprisingly affordable (at the quinta).
I was told that this was still going strong the following nights.
