Colour: ruby with amber at rim
Aromatics: kaleidoscope of scents, strawberry and Tawny Port-like nuttiness and cedariness, then with air getting more peppery, coffee beans, coriander and anise, green tobacco leaves, plus dark bitter chocolate and licorice, substantially above its peers Fonseca, Taylors and Grahams.
Palate: mouthfeel of sugary viscosity, even though the wine does not necessarily come across as particularly sweet. A step up even from the best bottles of 1970 Taylor, Graham and Fonseca, powerful and overwhelming, a massive wine, but balanced and disclosing at least some of the elegance of the vintage. Very, very long and persistent.
Cheers, victor
