1985 Fonseca Vintage Port

Served by the glass in Muscat's best restaurant, where we had dinner to celebrate two years of marriage. Hurray for us. :)

The sommeliere told us that they brought these bottles in themselves, because there is nothing of the sort available locally (we already figured that one out). She opened the bottle the day before: perfect.

This showed as Fonseca 85 tends to show: dark, tannic, spicy and too young. On other bottles I noticed some lovely fresh aromas as lemongrass, but that was absent on this one. This was more dark spicy (black pepper, nutmeg, cloves) and slightly dusty (not in a bad way though). Full and young tasting, with a peppery finish. Great stuff, a wonderful way to close a very good dinner.

All of yesterday I was thinking 'why is 18th January important?' - doh! Congratulations on two years marriage both of you, amazing that it was two years ago.

The fact that you've found a restaurant that serves a 1985 Fonseca correctly is astonishing, a Port that will just get better and better for the next 20 - 30 years at least.

Thanks! It is indeed good to have a restaurant where you can order a good glass of port. It is also very expensive, so I think we'll have to limit ourselves to special occasions.
