1988 Cockburn LBV

Bottled 1994 and decanted off a very surprising amount of sediment for a filtered LBV port. Dark, burnt orange in colour and with a transparent centre. Burnt cabbage on the nose (which is actually more pleasant than the description makes it sound) and thick, black molasses. Surprisingly thick texture, very sweet in the mouth with lots of brown sugar and black licorice and some slightly bitter tannins still left in the wine, although most of the structure comes from the acidity. The aftertaste is soft and creamy, full of vanilla ice cream and creme brulee. This is a delicious, but very tertiary, bottle of LBV which probably has another 5 years or so before starting to move off its plateau. 85/100. Drunk at its best after 24 hours decanting on 10 Feb 2010.
