1983 Warre

W83: mid-translucent fine red. Again, heat and oranges. Soft. Late the fruit changed from orange to raspberry.

Generally I’m not a fan of the 1983 vintage, but I liked this.

On the night: Much lighter than the 1980 and quite an advanced colour for its age. A little stewed, which I find to be a signature of the 83 vintage, but with a good length. I was not too impressed with this but others seemed to like it more than I did.

4 days later: Bright ruby red. Slightly grapey nose. Thick and sweet entry then a huge burst of tannin. The finish is sweet in the cheeks and very dry on the tongue and lips. Better than it was 4 days ago.

This rather puts paid to the myth that you have to drink vintage port within a day or two of opening it. I have kept a half bottle of the 1983 at 12C for the last week that was liberated from Sussex and am drinking it tonight. It is darkly coloured, full of sweet blackberries on the nose and a glorious mix of blackberry and floral perfume in the mouth with just the right amount of acidity and tannins to give a very, very long finish. It is delicious and a great accompaniment to trying to read through all the tasting notes which have been posted in the last 2 weeks. 90/100. Opened 17 April (when it was my third WOTN) and drunk 26 April 2010.
