Tasted at this event on 19th July 2011.

Those of you who know me well are familiar with my tendency towards brevity when under pressure at a large tasting. I can honestly say that I have set a new standard with this particular note, which perhaps does not do full justice to what is generally regarded as one of the finest wines to come out of the Douro/VNG in recent times.

This is perhaps the most complete and descriptive note I have ever written using only eight keystrokes:

"Dalva 52"

You can't argue with the accuracy of the description, although I do concede that it is difficult to ascertain the finer nuances of the experience unless you concentrate very hard when reading the note.

Light brown colour, slight greening at the rim. Vibrant lime and toffee on the nose (others described this as licorice); Strong acidity on the impact, that lets a little golden syrup sweetness show through. Brown sugar sweetened grapefuit dominates a full palate. Warm on the aftertaste, with the grapefruit dominating the huge finish. Absolutely delicious. 93/100.
