NV Quinta do Noval Ruby (Fine Ruby)

I finally cracked and opened the half-bottle of this which I have been lugging from Vienna (not realising that those further East do not seem to drink Port, and that would be my last chance to acquire some  :crying: ).

No mention of Quinta do Noval on the front of the bottle which I think means that this is not a Single Quinta port.

Reddish colour, deepish in the centre, fading to a light purple at the rim.

On the nose, good dense fruit. Lots of blackcurrants. Some of that complex grapyness that comes with young Vintage Port. Quite attractive. In the mouth, however, this is a big let-down. Some rounded blackcurrants, quite a lot of rose or rose-water and simple sugary syrup are the best points. This is followed immediately by a very rough astringent aftertaste which, unfortunately, perseveres for quite a long time. Perhaps there is a little red cherry too? In any event there is not enough to sort out the wine, and there is quite a lot of badly integrated alcohol too, which is not a good thing.

One of the weaker Rubies I have tried. A disappointment from such a big name.

Eking out the bottle, some of the astringency has mellowed, but has taken some fruit with it. Oranges are now coming through. Perhaps a bit more drinkable now than before but still not great.
