Intact embossed lead capsule. UK bottling by Morgan Furze & Co Ltd. Level is well into the neck and only 1cm below the base of the cork.

Purchased at auction by Tom Archer in 2007 from the cellar of the late Lord Lichfield.
Intact embossed lead capsule. UK bottling by Morgan Furze & Co Ltd. Level is well into the neck and only 1cm below the base of the cork.

Decanted at 07:50 on 1 sep 07. Bottom portion of the cork became detached and fell into the wine. Beautiful colour. Lost quite a lot of juice in decanting due to the huge amount of crust.

DRT, looking over my shoulder, wants the full bottle back. And he’s not wrong.
Very darkly opaque. Red, no brown, no blue. Nose, when sampled indoors, full of pepper. And a huge peppery length. A great port. UncleTomScore = 10-9.

A big dark red colour for a wine of this age which reveals a youthful purple when swirled in the glass. Huge, thick, chewy and tannic mouthful of plums with an immense finish.

To say that I've never been disappointed in a Fonseca 1970 is a bit of an understatement. Every time it has shown up well in illustrious company and has been near the top of every tasting.
This time it was difficult to get a nose, due to being outside but when inside it was fruity and nicely spicy with a big hit of black pepper. Thick and sweet with a nice backbone and floral notes finishing with chocolate. Absolutely superb Port and my favourite for drinking now. Still has plenty of life to keep for several years though.
