1963 Taylor

On Tuesday 11th October 2011, at the RAF Club, was held a ‘square’ tasting of {Dow, Fonseca, Graham, Taylor} × {1963, 1966, 1970, 1977}. Our honoured guest was Cynthia Jenson, official blogger to the Symingtons.

a63, lated identified as T63: Brick red, fading to pink. Nose faint, and ‟off”. ‟Yuck. Sour start to finish.”

A pity - on texture alone, it was glorious in the mouth. Other things were wrong with it, to be sure, but no so wrong that it wasn't polished off at the end of the night! **

Light to medium colour, very slightly darker than the other 63s. Medicinal hint on the nose, very flat flavour in the mouth; a little wood, and hint of VA on the finish. Overall an obviously damaged port. Poor.

Deep orange colour, rose on the rim; 30% opaque and slightly cloudy. Sharp nose, aggressive and woody - full of pine needles. Sharp entry, thick texture that is dominated by strong acidity. Fruit is sharp and sour, but mouthfilling. Hot acidity, but work can bring out some sweetness. Lovely long aftertaste of cedar and dried cranberry. Drying out a little, not as pleasant as it should be. Declined in the glass over the evening. Served blind, and guessed to be the Taylor. 85/100
