On Tuesday 11th October 2011, at the RAF Club, was held a ‘square’ tasting of {Dow, Fonseca, Graham, Taylor} × {1963, 1966, 1970, 1977}. Our honoured guest was Cynthia Jenson, official blogger to the Symingtons.

e66, lated identified as F66: dark red, 70% opaque. Nose of plum fruit. Nose was better than palate, which was slightly marred by early- and mid-palate acridity.

So dark by comparison to other '66s that most had made their guess at its identity before picking any of the glasses up!

I think JDAW is being picky - this was still stupendous, and a better showing than at the Fonseca/Fonseca Guimaraens tasting earlier this year. I would absolutely love to get hold of some of these. Pipped by the Graham tonight, though going by colour, weight and structure, will probably outlast it. My second favourite wine of the evening *****

The darkest of the 66s (noticeably darker than the others); Very good overall, though not superb (as I had expected) and behind the Grahams for me.

Deeper red in colour, solid rim; 70% opaque. Lovely nose, a little alcoholic but full of fruit. Fabulous entry, massively fruity; still softly tannic. Hugely flavoured, huge palate. Big aftertaste and a huge finish. A massive wine that still has many years ahead of it. My wine of the night from the 16 wines on show. Served blind and guessed to be Fonseca. 94/100.
