On Tuesday 8th November 2011, in The Steak Exchange EC2A 2EH, friends gathered to note the return to London of jdaw1, and the recent birth of his second daughter. The theme was ‟Port With Star Quality”, with appropriately themed placemats.

Cr66 from RAYC: red, 50% opacity/ Nosing of plums and tannin. To taste sweet, lots of plum fruit, with a sugary very soft entry. Slightly imperfect in the mid-palate, but still fine drinking.

Guessed by JDAW and by JGH to be Graham 1985; by THRA to be Graham 1983. We weren’t close.

Ex-cellars from BBR. Gentle red colour, 40% opaque. Modest nose, showing a little cranberry. Balanced entry, mixing fruit and a touch of bitterness. Full bodied, rich and mouthfilling. A touch of sharpness and acidity on the late palate. Slightly hot on the aftertaste and then a long and powerful finish of sweet cranberry of great length. This is a beautiful port that needs more time to show fully. 91/100.
