On Tuesday 8th November 2011, in The Steak Exchange EC2A 2EH, friends gathered to note the return to London of jdaw1, and the recent birth of his second daughter. The theme was ‟Port With Star Quality”, with appropriately themed placemats.

T70 crusted, from BMHR. red-pink, 25% opaque. Nose had lots of red fruit. Mid-weight. A hint of roughness throughout, but still excellent. A bit lighter perhaps than a ‘real’ VP, but I couldn’t have said that blind. Very impressive.

Bottled in 1970. A burnished orange in colour, 30% opaque. Lovely on the nose, showing over-ripe and mouldy orange. Very sweet on the nose, but with a balancing sharpness against the lovely fruit. A little hollow on entry, showing little fruit and plenty of harshness. Air relaeases modest fruit, which does grow to pleasant levels. Light aftertaste, with a mild licorice finish which shows the gentle tannins that are in the wine. 87/100.
