1997 Gould Campbell

From a half bottle

D+0

about 40% - 50% translucent. Difficult to identify the nose -- certainly fresh and supple...more purple than brown (plums rather than sugar), but something else....not chemically, but not fruity...hmm...more anon.

Anyway, so far this is a really nice effort from a producer than never gets its fair share of respect. In general, while I have a limited sample (due to their youth), I've found port across the board to have taken a big step forward over the last 15 or so years, such that even in imperfect vintages (97, 03, 07, etc), producers from across the spectrum are capable of delivering really satisfying and dignified wines. Kudos.
