In honour of the visit of Ronnie Roots, a few regulars gathered in The Bung Hole to sample some 1970 ports.

Re: 1970 Fonseca
Deep red, 90% opaque. Modest - even restrained - nose. Lots of alcohol and sweetened cranberry; surprisingly light nose. Sweet fruit dominates the entry, with the fruit building to large levels with a spicy core that is really peppery. Lovely mid- full-bodied palate; fabulous. Superb, sweet aftertaste with a huge finiah. This is amazing port. 96/100. 1 hour decant.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Re: 1970 Fonseca
Dark ruby colour, quite impressive. Very expressive, lively nose. Violets, dark cherries, all not overpowering but intense in its persistence. Packed with flavours: dark fruit, coffee, bay leaf and beautifully integrated fine tannins. Long finish. Very youthful still and incredibly impressive. Head and shoulders above the rest, my no. 1 of the evening.

F70, decanted 18:30. Dark red, 70% opaque. Nose had big sweet fruit. Very lovely. Smooth, then a hint of beast roughness.
