1997 Sandeman Vau

Post by jdaw1 »

On Tuesday 18th September 2012 some of the obvious suspects gathered in the Bung Hole, for company and entertainment, and to taste some Ports, including several samples of Sandeman Vau.

SV97: pop-and-pour. Red, pink at edge, cloudy (decanted through a metal gauze). Nose stack. Off. Not tasted.

Using the new international port-tasting scale ({Excellent, Good, Nice, Tolerable, or Inadequate}), mostly scored I, with one T and one N.

I suspect a bad bottle.

Half bottle sourced from Stevens Garnier. Mature colour, bricking rim, slightly cloudy. Unattractive nose, full of bottle stink. Bland entry, dry and chalky tannins dominating over leightweight stewed fruit. Vegetal tones on the palate from the bottle stink - but this does turn intoa really nice raspberry finish of decent length. 83/100. Decanted ½ hour.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

It did not taste right, I agree. My guess is that the cork was of bad quality and accelerated the aging process. Hence why it was not liked. Colour was also with a hint of brown.
