1977 Warre vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Gorgeous mature russet red colour, crystal clarity and about 50% opaque. Immediately after decanting, this had an incredible scent of pure Ribena (blackcurrant cordial) but this later evolved and opened to an inviting perfumed raspberry and toffee. Lots of toffee and sweet red licorice dominates the silky smooth medium-bodied palate. Late on the palate the very soft tannins show as a slight pepperiness. Sweet, but balanced by a subdued but adequate acidity. Delicious, sweet raspberry and caramel aftertaste and long finish make this a very fine, mature port that is drinking perfectly today and should continue to do so for a decade or two. 92/100. Drunk 2 December 2012 after decanting for 2 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
