1957 Fonseca Val de Mendiz, Oporto bottled 1960, though served blind as both ‟Loud Left” and as ‟#9”.

Red-pink, 30% opaque. Nose had a touch of VA, but also good red fruit. taste light, hint of strawberry. Warre style, I thought. Nicely balanced. I liked.

Is this a slightly-weak Warre 1970? Let’s be pointlessly bold and say Oporto bottled. At least the second sentence was correct.

Bottled by Fonseca in Oporto in 1960. Red centre and a rose coloured rim; 30%. Soft rose petals on the nose, mixed with a concentrated sour plum - interesting and attractive. Soft and sweet entry with a good palate presence and a delightful texture. The flavours are lightweight to start with, but then grow, develop and blossom. A touch of heat shows on the aftertaste before a sweet and fruity finish of wonderful length that comes with a delicate floral overtone. This is a fabulous port, drinking really well and firm enough to last 10-20 years in this condition - mature and at its peak. 90/100. Drunk 15-Feb-13. Decanted 3 hours.
