1989 Mellor LBV

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Supplied by Quinta do Bucheiro, sold in the UK through Russell Mellor as "Mellor's LBV"; now the best quality port held in Imperial College's cellars.

Bottled in 1993; sealed with a driven cork but with so little fine sediment that it is likely that it was filtered. Even coffee filter paper failed to prevent the wine having a muddy brown appearance in the glass; clearly fully mature. Caramel and licorice all sorts on the nose; toffee on the nose, with some attractive fruit acidity providing structure. Charcoal finish of great length. Simple and straightforward, but good finish. 82/100. 13-Apr-13. Decanted 4 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
