1963 Quarles Harris

To celebrate the Quinquagenary of AHB, he arranged a horizontal of 1963s in Wokingham at The Cantley House Hotel (evenings of Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October 2013) and The Walter Arms (lunch on Saturday 12th), and two evening Champagne tastings for our better halves. Sadly the venue was not able to accommodate all he would have liked to have invited. Diaries had been blocked since early 2012, and bottles had been gathered for most of a decade before that. A splendid weekend indeed.

Partial links:
Review of the event as a whole, which starts with a full set of links;
Placemats (and parameters by which constructed).

QH63. Dark red, 40% opaque. Very acidic to taste alas flawed.

Good colour. Dusty nose. A very good mouthful of Port - delicious. Perhaps a bit simple and a little bitterness on the end but very nice Port.

Browning, seemed slightly tired and oxidised, but quite good quaffing.

1963 Quarles Harris Vintage Port
A dark cola color. A bit lean in structure initially. This filled out with cinnamon, nutmeg, and dried fruit. Fully mature but holding very nicely from this house. I was surprised at how well this lesser regarded house is doing.
89 Points

dark brownish ruby red; a bit dirty and cloudy; nose after christmas cake/pudding; dried fruit; palate after fruits being marinated with rum, long finsh and full bodied; for me a bit lack in complexity but a very good port indeed!

Deep brown with a red hint; 60% opaque. Hot red licorice on the nose. Medium texture, oddly lacking in flavours at first, but develops plenty of layers and complexity. Comes with pleasant floral tones in the mix. Big aftertaste, with a huge burst of heat and dry cocoa tannins that dominate the edges of the tongue. Very enjoyable port. 92/100. Drunk 11-Oct-13. Decanted 4½ hours.
