To celebrate the Quinquagenary of AHB, he arranged a horizontal of 1963s in Wokingham at The Cantley House Hotel (evenings of Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October 2013) and The Walter Arms (lunch on Saturday 12th), and two evening Champagne tastings for our better halves. Sadly the venue was not able to accommodate all he would have liked to have invited. Diaries had been blocked since early 2012, and bottles had been gathered for most of a decade before that. A splendid weekend indeed.

GC63. The darkest in this session. Fantastic opaque very dark red. Taste starts with big dark plums. Then heat, throughout. Fruit and heat in good balance. very good, lovely. Later there was also some mocha bitterness, but was still lovely.

Very dark. Huge, thick and full of dark fruits. Some bitterness on the finish but otherwise great Port.

Good wine. Solid with plenty of life left, although some residual tannins lacked elegance.

1963 Gould Campbell Vintage Port
Very dark color. Touch soapy with youthful fruit as well on the nose. The palate was soft initially with red fruit then transforms to a slight spirit and spicy long finish. The only thing holding this back from a higher score was just a very slight lack of complexity. But that’s really splitting hairs.
94 Points

deep, dark ruby red; glorious colour; very deep black cherry on the nose; silky on the palate, very complex; fresh; full bodied; great port!

Deep red with firm bricking, 90% opaque. Lovely nose, lots of luscious Victoria plums. Medium bodied impact, full of flavours dominated by fruit but with lots of tannin in the palate. Generous fragrance on the palate which leads through to the aftertaste and very long finish. This is very fine port. 93/100. Drunk 11-Oct-13. Decanted 5 hours.
