1963 Quinta de la Rosa

To celebrate the Quinquagenary of AHB, he arranged a horizontal of 1963s in Wokingham at The Cantley House Hotel (evenings of Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October 2013) and The Walter Arms (lunch on Saturday 12th), and two evening Champagne tastings for our better halves. Sadly the venue was not able to accommodate all he would have liked to have invited. Diaries had been blocked since early 2012, and bottles had been gathered for most of a decade before that. A splendid weekend indeed.

Partial links:
Review of the event as a whole, which starts with a full set of links;
Placemats (and parameters by which constructed).

Rs63. Red, 30% opaque. Nose had lovely strawberry fruit. Taste as well, and lovely, with a slight bitterness throughout. But an even touch of strawberries as well. Lovely.

I could believe that this was a component of Sandeman. Indeed, I could even believe that it is the same as Sandeman consistent with the label. Perhaps others with more knowledge could pronounce.

Thicker and more acidic than the Sandeman, perhaps with a little Douro bake.

Nice complexity, elegant. Slightly over the hill, but not in a bad way. My second place wine from this flight.

I'm curious as to whether this juice was, customarily, a component of Sandeman, or of Rebello Valente, which is the other version of the story I'd heard. Does anybody know?

Quite possibly both. Sandeman did not own any of their own quintas until 1988 (Vau), so all grapes were "bought in". They had purchased Robertson Borthers (who produced port under the Rebello Valente brand) in the early 1950s.

1963 Quinta de la Rosa Vintage Port
This was labeled Sandeman. This was a time when QdlR was selling their grapes to Sandeman and this was made from grapes from the Quinta especially for them by Sandeman. To my knowledge this was never commercially released. A solid cola color with a fragrant nose of dried rose pedals. Semi sweet bodied, dried fruit, spices, well balanced and elegant. A long lingering finish rounded out a surprise of the flight.
94-95 Points

light red ruby colour; menthol, minty nose; cherry and chery stones in the nose; cherry, honey on the palate; fresh, fragrant; light in body, but a really nice port.

I actually could persuade Sophia to give us a bottle in exchange for another 63. I did and do like the mineralic style of the La Rosa bottled "Sandeman" Ports a lot. So far I had the 60, 63, 70 and 72! (two of them with Daniel) and they do not fail to impress for what they are, especially the mineralic note I did find latest in the Grahams The Stone Terraces.

We should do a La Rosa Vertical at La Rosa soon.

Medium red, bricking on the edge; 50% opaque. Big and fragrant nose full of attractive, bright fruit. Thick texture, slightly hollow on the early palate but with pleasant dusty fruit. Medium bodied with nice mid-palate complexity and some lovely cedar wood. Big and tingling on the aftertaste, full of lingering gentle cherries. 88/100. Drunk 11-Oct-13. Decanted 6 hours.
