1963 Mackenzie

To celebrate the Quinquagenary of AHB, he arranged a horizontal of 1963s in Wokingham at The Cantley House Hotel (evenings of Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October 2013) and The Walter Arms (lunch on Saturday 12th), and two evening Champagne tastings for our better halves. Sadly the venue was not able to accommodate all he would have liked to have invited. Diaries had been blocked since early 2012, and bottles had been gathered for most of a decade before that. A splendid weekend indeed.

Partial links:
Review of the event as a whole, which starts with a full set of links;
Placemats (and parameters by which constructed).

Mk63. red, 40% opaque. Nose noted as ‟’orrible”.   JDAW to DRT: ‟Was the taste the same as the nose?”   DRT: ‟worse”.

Good colour — strange nose and sugary sweet. Not nice.

Full and quite elegant, but a little bit woody — oxidised?

Glorious red colour, orange rim; slightly restrained cherry nose; a bit one dimensional in complexity but very good long finish; umami taste, great port but lacks a bit mid palate.

Mid-red with a copper edge; 40% opaque, Smelly nose, not attractive and showing considerable heat. Thick in texture with rich chocolate tannins supporting a sweet and concentrated red jelly bean flavour giving a lovely palate presence. The jelly bean comes through on the aftertaste and leads to an attractive length finish that is full of sharp dried cranberries. 88/100. Drunk 12-Oct-13. Decanted 3 hours.
