1963 Martinez

To celebrate the Quinquagenary of AHB, he arranged a horizontal of 1963s in Wokingham at The Cantley House Hotel (evenings of Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October 2013) and The Walter Arms (lunch on Saturday 12th), and two evening Champagne tastings for our better halves. Sadly the venue was not able to accommodate all he would have liked to have invited. Diaries had been blocked since early 2012, and bottles had been gathered for most of a decade before that. A splendid weekend indeed.

Mz63. Red-orange, 30% opaque. My first glass was dirty, but post-substitution, faint sweetness on nose. Taste has oranges, and a sweetness like marmalade. Good length. Liked.

Light colour. Good weight - dry mid-palate with a nice long finish. Good port but drink up now.

Good complex wine, spoiled by an excess of heat.

light ruby red, very good but light colour; giving little away on the nose, smelled a bit after sweets I had as a child; very good port with a long finish, strawberries, medium bodied; very fresh and fragrant!

Pale red, 20% opaque. Little on the nose other than a bit of sweet floral perfume. Dusty perfume on entry with an elegant balance of sweet raisins and preserved cherry. This grows on the palate and maintains its terrific balance. Great aftertaste and finish. A lovely elegance to this port. Very fine. 93/100. Drunk 12-Oct-13. Decanted 4 hours.
