1963 Burmester

To celebrate the Quinquagenary of AHB, he arranged a horizontal of 1963s in Wokingham at The Cantley House Hotel (evenings of Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October 2013) and The Walter Arms (lunch on Saturday 12th), and two evening Champagne tastings for our better halves. Sadly the venue was not able to accommodate all he would have liked to have invited. Diaries had been blocked since early 2012, and bottles had been gathered for most of a decade before that. A splendid weekend indeed.

B63. Nose of burnt sugar. Taste similar, and of middling weight.

Good colour with dark fruit. A bit one dimensional but nice drinking port.

As an aside, this bottle was purchased by me in Vilamoura in southern Portugal in 1999. When I bought it it was the most expensive and oldest bottle of wine I had ever purchased. I am very pleased it found a good home 88)

light brown, orange red color with watery rim; thin, light colheita smell; light body, sweetness on the palate and bitter in the finish; not a great port.

Deep orange, with a pale rim; 60% opaque. Sharp lemon and lime on the nose. Mid-weight entry with a nice smooth texture. Lots of toffee and caramel wrapped around a sharp apple acidity. Big and lively aftertaste that came as a real surprise. Rather a pleasant port. 87/100. Drunk 12-Oct-13. Decanted 11 hours.
