To celebrate the Quinquagenary of AHB, he arranged a horizontal of 1963s in Wokingham at The Cantley House Hotel (evenings of Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October 2013) and The Walter Arms (lunch on Saturday 12th), and two evening Champagne tastings for our better halves. Sadly the venue was not able to accommodate all he would have liked to have invited. Diaries had been blocked since early 2012, and bottles had been gathered for most of a decade before that. A splendid weekend indeed.

Alex added a Tappitt Hen of Warre 1977 to Friday evening’s event, in case we were thirsty. Also see the review of the event as a whole.

W77. No contemporaneous note taken, but a lovely full-bodied addition to the late evening.

1977 Warre’s Vintage Port (Tappit Hen)
No formal notes, but this was the most youthful ’77 Warre’s I’ve ever had. I need to get me some of these.

Very attractive colour, the perfect colour for a mature port. Gentle spiced fruit on the nose, warm and rounded in the mouth. Not complex but very refined and elegant with plenty of sweet red fruit and some soft tannins adding a little tobacco spice. Warm, sweet redcurrants on the aftertaste. Perfect port to consume while sitting round a table putting the world to rights after a flight of 15 glasses of 1963 port. 88/100. Drunk 11-Oct-13. Decanted 10 hours.
