On Thursday 19th December 2013 a subset of the obvious suspects gathered at The Bell in Wendens Ambo to taste old, peculiar and unknown bottles.

Lovely deep red, dark orange rim. Attractive nose, a hint of juniper - quite a savoury tone. Some gentle dark espresso, big and powerful on the palate. Very dense, very concentrated with big, concentrated black chocolate and juniper berries on the palate. The finish is big and long, starting as juniper and eventually finishing as burnt marmalade. Very impressive. Served blind this was guessed to be Dow 1945. 94/100.

Flat nose, ok umami flavour profile and pleasant enough but was not blown away by this. I felt this was slightly empty until some nicely concentrated burnt marmalade showed through at the finish - 88

Seeing the praise this got in the WOTN voting, I wonder if I had a dirty glass.

F20. Bright red, 30% opaque. Palate had heat, chocolate throughout, and slight coffee late. I agreed with RAYC’s “marmalade”.
