1983 Fonseca

Deep red colour, brick-red rim; 50% opaque. Faint nose, a little toffee apple but very difficult to pick up anything. A touch too cold initially, but nice texture on a mid-weight port; tertiary fruit, full of toffee and sultanas. Very little tannin with the structure and balance being given by a strong dose of apple acidity and delicate flower perfume. Simple palate; but the aftertaste is enormous and the finish very long, dominated by lime and the acidity that shows brown sugar after a while - a very impressive finish. 87/100. Drunk 21-Feb-14. Decanted 1½ hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
