1986 Warre LBV (unfiltered)

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Traditional unfiltered LBV, bottled in 1990. Decanted off a surprising amount of solid sediment. A lovely mahogany-red colour, sparkling clarity and very attractive; 30% opaque. Restrained on the nose, showing some dried dates and soft caramel. Lovely texture on the palate, flavoursome and intense with lots of sweet tobacco, floral perfume and dried sour cherries. Huge aftertaste, powerful and long lasting with the intense sherbert lemon acidity that supported the palate. Very, very fine LBV port. 91/100. Drunk 07-Feb-14. Decanted 2 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I believe this is the same LBV Glenn and I were trying to procure for an Old LBV tasting a few months hence. Unfortunately, the seller had just unloaded all of them to a restaurant, which in light of this note, seems extra unfortunate.

Old Warre LBV ports turn up on the secondary market from time to time and I recently drank a Warre 1974 LBV. If they are sensibly priced I am always happy to buy them because of their quality. If I recall correctly, I managed to pick this up for about £16.

Actually, looking back on my old notes, I had this wine about 3 years ago, and it was lovely as well. Picked it up at auction for about $30 all told I think, so similar price to yours. A very fair price.
