2012 Fonseca Guimaraens

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Deep red in colour, with more purple and a wider transparent rim than the Vargellas 2012. Fresh picked daisies dominate the nose, herbaceous and attractive. Restrained palate at first, with dry charcoal tannins - more tannic than the Vargellas - and modest fruit. The fruit delivers and grows with air but is full of sweet bruised apples and dry blackcurrant skins. Eventually the port becomes a full and complete mouthfull. The aftertaste is gentle, delicate and perfumed, with a lovely lingering finish of parma violets. Surprisingly elegant for such a young port. 91-93. Tasted 14 May 2014.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
