SV97, in double magnum. The first three quarters poured freehand, into two bottles and a decanter. At the end of the third fine sediment started to show, so the fourth through a coffee filter into another decanter. And that fine sediment clogged three filters, taking about two hours to go through. The third and fourth quarters, freehand and through filter, were compared. D+0 to D+2hr, both dark dark red, 85% opaque. Freehand, nose and palate, bright cherry, a hint of mint, that manifested itself in the palate as heat. But the filtered version had more plum than cherry, dark plum at that, and was more closed.

More tomorrow. From Daniel and I at the cricket, then from all in the evening.

The SV97 has darkened overnight, and is now 90%ish opaque. Nose difficult to note in the light wind of the Compton stand upper tier. Palate has lots of dark cherry.

It's a ravishing figgy pudding on the nose. There is almost no breeze, Julian is quite wrong about that. In the mouth there's delicious black dryness.

One of the conveniences of a double magnum is that one can decant a bottle for friends at TBH, and still have a decent quality-control sample left over. Maybe I should have brought a larger proportion of that with me, as it is drinking very nicely.

A celebratory glass of Sandeman Vau 97 to mark Karunaratne's wicket. Now I can taste sticky pecans as well.

I agree with the dryness, especially late-palate. There is figiness, but much less than dark cherry. The pecans are a myth.

The acid is starting to show more clearly. Very good, gives a cleanness to this very rich juice.

Figiness? Is that related to figginess? Is it related to Orlando Figes?

Could it be that JDAW detects dark cherries because he ate all the dark cherries?

Libel! I have not eaten (quite) all of them. And I found cherries last night.

After lunch, this has progressed a great deal and now tastes like oyster stout.

Nonsense. My last three pints have tasted of Marston’s Pedigree.

Do you mean stout suitable for drinking with oysters, or stout made with oysters? (Admins...)

SV97, from 3l double-magnum. Dark dark red, 75% opaque. Nose of dark cherry. Palate dark cherry. Good port, though lighter than my favourites.

80% opacity, very dark red. Not much nose. Dry finish.

Clearly I was getting weary of using ink at this point in the evening.

At these tastings my notes start mediocre and then deteriorate. Your weariness of ink is understood.
