1972 Offley

At the generous instigation of Alex B.: “Please, no-one bring anything except where I have asked for help. This is supposed to be a cellar reduction party so I am happy to supply various bottles for us to share. A handful of people know some of what will be brought, but I'll serve all bottles blind.”

So we went to a Helen-less Bung Hole to meet Amy — who had just left for the day. (No problem: we met her two days later.)

O72. Brick red, 30% opaque. Nose faint caramel. I loved the texture: soft and oleaginous. Not much fruit, but the texture of fine mature Port. Reminded me of this Cockburn 1947, though with less fruit.

So there was joy and surprise when told that this was Yugoslav industrial alcohol, as purchased by the IVDP. Soft fully mature old VP.

Deep orange colour, mature and ready. Plasticised nose, perhaps showing signs of oxidation. Pleasant texture on entry, but unpleasant, lightweight and plastic tainted. Spoiled by oxidation perhaps. Lacing in fruit and overly harsh, dry and tannic. Hollow and lacking anything other than heat and a dry finish. 78/00. Drunk 26-Aug-14. 12 hour decant.

We perceived this very differently.
