Dirk was happy to play barman all evening and do what he loves best, which is to twiddle a decanter in an ice bucket. This bottle had a handwritten label - Coronation Port, 1936, bottled 1935. Tom picked this up in an auction earlier this year; we were baffled because there was no coronation in 1936. The cork revealed Graham 1933 bottled 1936, not a declared year.

Dark chestnut colour, bright, some slight browning. Acidic bite in the nose, with some noble cherries. Light varnish in mouth, school desk, with a finish of dry bitter cherries. Remarkably fresh for a 1933!

24 hours later, the nose is a little meatier, the mouth a little less pronounced, with heat, sweet mincemeat, some chocolate or caramel. A long, dry finish.

The cork confirmed this to be Graham 1933, bottled 1936. Deep red in colour with a rose rim; 20% opaque. Dusty fruit on the nose, lively and interesting. Sweet and mature on the palate; great sweet port that is full of fruit yet with an amazing balance. Sweet and fragrant fruit on the long finish. Very, very fine. 93/100.
