1977 Offley

Post by djewesbury »

Some friends gathered in The Boot and Flogger on Redcross Way, SE1, as part of our quest to find a new home. We had an excellent evening, mainly drinking from the Davy's wine list.

Decanted at approximately 11.30. Warm reddy brown, perhaps about 60% opaque. An excellent nose: icing sugar on stollen; rich marzipan. A light entry followed by subtle dryness at the base of the palate, great dryness then grows and lasts, an underlying bitterness (orange peel) remaining.

Decanted 5 hrs. 30% opacity, garnet. Slightly dirty dusty nose with a mildly spirituous edge, but with lots of aromas - strawberry, Christmas cake, honeycomb. In the mouth, lovely and sweet, a little thin, a fruit burst mid palate.

Bought from the list of the Boot & Flogger. Warm red colour, 30% opaque. Slight heat on the nose, full of lovely dusty plums and ripe figs after a swirl; lots of old library books. Sweet and thick entry, full of lively zing - masses of fruit and Christmas cake; so much complexity. Well balanced by the acidity yet kept peppery and spicy by the mature tannins that give a lovely dryness to the whole. Some heat shows on the aftertaste, then a long finish full of fragrant fruit. Great length, great elegance. 92/100.
