1966 Quinta do Noval

Post by djewesbury »

Some friends gathered in The Boot and Flogger on Redcross Way, SE1, as part of our quest to find a new home. We had an excellent evening, mainly drinking from the Davy's wine list.

Offley 1977 (B&F)
Noval 1966 (B&F)
Dow 1970 (DRT)
Churchill 1994 (B&F)
Warre 1970 (B&F)

AHB had said he would buy a Ck63 from the B&F list, but they were sold out when he asked. Having arrived, he disappeared for quite some time, re-emerging with a bottle from the cellars which he served blind. I guessed Warre 70; then I made no tasting note.

Decanted 30 mins. 30% opacity, didn't note the colour. Slightly sharp spiritous nose, chocolate. Lively in the mouth, fresh and then quick to some spiritous heat. I guessed Noval '63

Bought from the list of the Boot & Flogger. Bottled by Fearon Block & Grey in 1969. Deep red but bricking on the rim; 70% opaque. Terrific nose, sweet fruit with fresh herbs - big and powerful fruit. Thick texture on the palate, big flavours full of sweet and concentrated fruit. Complex and robust on the palate. Just as thick and powerful on the aftertaste. Great port, which is concentrated and sticky, really impressive. 94/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
