1994 Dow

Red/brown in colour, more mature in appearance than the Warre 1994 shown alongside. Gentle nose of sweet and slightly stewed fruit. Sweet fruit on the palate but with a nice acidity that provides focus. Tannins show late on the palate and provide support to a second wave of complexity. A very late spark of spiciness. The finish is spicy and lively, tingling the lips before the sweet fruit arrives. An impressive wine that is still closed. 90/100.

As with the Warre I was puzzled by this. Plenty dark enough, it was rather tumultuous on the nose and palate. I preferred this to the Warre but mainly because being drier it seemed to hold together better. I did not come away from either of these 94s thinking pleasant thoughts about the vintage.

60% opacity, brown-red, some bricking. Dirty jammy nose. Quick to heat and a dry tannic finish. Lots of fruit but a bit too jammy.

My notes only say this: smells of eucalyptus, light body, quite sweet for a Dow (I thought this was the Warre until I checked the bottle)
