On Tuesday 31
st March 2015 we gathered in the
Boot & Flogger for a tasting to say goodbye to
Magnus, who is returning to Sweden. The theme was initially ‘Blind and informal’, to which
DRT added some birthday 1965s.

W66, from flash. Dark red, 70% opaque. This was astonishingly young-tasting, with big sweetness and dark fruits. The cork clearly said Warre 196…, which was much much older than I thought. Fabulously stored.

Incorrectly guessed as Noval '66 but hey-ho at least i got the vintage right.
Dark-ish ruby. Good hit of dark fruit and stone fruit kernels on the nose which carries onto the palate. Initially (shortly after pour), this had a slightly harsh and alcoholic end note which vanished during the course of the evening and i revised my score upward. Lovely port which has more to offer. Tied for second with GM65 on the night. Big thanks to Mike for bringing this.

This was lovely Port. I took no notes but remember it being very elegant, balanced and perfectly mature.
Warre 1966 was the first proper VP I opened at home so this was a nice reminder of what it was that got me hooked.

Mine too. Good to remember where it all started. And to see how far it has come. I may have to dig out my last one. Then find some more.

30% opacity, red-brown, slight clouding. Really smooth mature port, sweetness, honeycomb, red fruit in the mouth.

Brick-red colour, 80% opaque. Gently spicy on the nose, full of lovely nutmeg and redcurrant juice; delicious, even if not pronounced. A lovely texture in the mouth with nice poise on entry. Midweight presence but full of evolved fruit infused with cinammon. A glorious aftertaste followed by a big and lasting finish full of cedarwood and cranberry, the tannins providing a nice gentle red peppercorn spiciness. Served blind this was guessed to be Warre 1970. Drunk 91/100.
