th Bicentenary, we gathered in the Boot & Flogger and tasted some Fonsecas.

The F'70 decanted at 12.00 following a long fight with the '80's cork, however, is looking splendid...that is if it really is a F'70....no IVDP cello on an unusual necked and clear green bottle and the cork which extracted in one piece but with a chunk missing in the middle has a Fonseca Vintage marking but no date.
I shall be intrigued as to what everyone else thinks.

F70. Glorious red, 50% opaque. Nose of rich red fruit, and just a hint of treacle tart. My note about the palate was concise: “Dryness. Another lovely Port.”

Deep red, a powerful red colour with a rose rim; 80% opaque. Lively on the nose, rich and powerful fruit with lots of mace and all spice infused through a melange of stewed red fruit. Sweet entry, brown sugar at first; some crystallised fruit. Slow and reluctant to deliver the complexity of the palate but patience allows caramelised fruit, redcurrant and a hint of bitter quinine. Great complexity on the late palate. Brown caramelized sugar on the finish, light and elegant strawberry jam. 93/100. Decanted 7 hours.
