On Tuesday 5th May 2015, the evening before The B.F.T., in the year of Fonseca’s 200th Bicentenary, we gathered in the Boot & Flogger and tasted some Fonsecas.

FG58. Red-pink, 30% opaque. Strawberries in the nose. Palate that of rich big excellent mature Port.

Much better than my previous experience of FG58.

Brick -red with a light brown tone; 40% opaque. Little showing on the nose, just a touch of subdued fruit. Silky entry, smooth and attractive with a sweet and fragrant set of flavours and a lovely delicacy and balance. Slow to deliver, this gets surprisingly lively on the palate with several different phases of flavour. There is some heat on the aftertaste before a dry licorice and redcurrant finish. This is an elegant wine with a big presence and finish. However, when retasted after the '94 Fonseca this was shown to be a much lighter and weaker wine than the first impression given in isolation. 90/100. Decanted 5 hours.
