New York, ‘emergency’ mini-tasting (Thu 27 Dec?)

Posted: 03:28 Fri 21 Dec 2007
by jdaw1
Two facts:
  1. At home I have bottles of Graham 1985, Warre 1985, and Ramos Pinto 1985;
  2. The wife is away for two weeks.
If any New Yorkers can put these two facts together to make an ‘emergency’ mini-tasting, please do say so here.

  Or more than one such tasting.

Done. Let me track down an 85, we can have a mini horizontals of 85s.

How's the 26th and/or the 27th?

An emergency, indeed. What dates are you contemplating?

Today until Thursday 3rd January 2008.

When you say “and†, are you proposing two different tastings

When you say “and†, are you proposing two different tastings on consecutive days? That works for me.

Wow, this does sound like an emergency!

I will be away from Saturday, the 22nd and I'm not exactly sure when I will be getting back, but it will probably be the 27th or 28th.

If I can make it, I can contribute a Taylor 85 for sure, but I might also have one or two rather obscure oddball 85s that might be interesting to add to the mix. I'll let you guys know what I have when I check my stash at the parents' house.

Enough bottles

If I’m bringing three bottles, and g-man some more, then you probably won’t need to bring that many extras.

I have a stash at my father’s. I also have a spreadsheet telling what I have. Consider that a recommendation.

yes, both days do indeed work for me.

I'm going to be driving around long island and going to see if i can find any good wine stores in the area.

Shall we set the 27th as a firm date for Julian, Eric, Jay and me?

Julian we can have another mini on the 26th? What do you think about doing a tasting of non decanted port, keeping our leftovers for the proper tasting on the 27th and seeing how it develops?

Any of those dates work for me. Julian, perhaps I could adopt one of your bottles? Or if you have a shoppe in the City you would recommend I procur a bottle or two.

Fantastic idea! But a two-day tasting will, as you imply, require extra supplies.

Think of yourself as a foster parent.

Location? I wouldn’t mind varying the location. If we are few, and those few aren’t fussy about tidiness, it could be in my apartment?

Definitely,

I'm going to see if i can find a Dow 85' and Infantado 85' over the weekend.

I personally can chip in a Fonseca 85' that i have on hand right now.

The 27th works well for me. I am indifferent to the location. The advantage of Julian's offer is that we would avoid a hefty corkage fee. I don't know yet whether I will have a bottle to contribute (as it would have to travel from Ct) or whether I will be an adoptive parent.

If there were interest and a place to smoke, I could bring a nice selection of well aged Cuban cigars as my contribution.

I'm probably going to bring 3 bottles Jay

Dow 85' and Infantado 85' or a Fonseca 85' that can be up for adoption if need be. Send me PM if you're interested.

And I have Partagas Lusitanias.

Wife not keen on the smell of stale cigar smoke. People who are warmly dressed could smoke on the roof deck.

And I have Partagas Lusitanias, vintage 1998.

Is that an Offley or an Offley Boa Vista 1968? Assuming the former, updated placemats.

I'm 90% sure I will be able to make it for the 27th. The emergency tasting situation sounds like it's getting pretty critical! Have you set a time yet?

It’s not yet DEFCON 1, perhaps nearer DEFCON 3.

Time? First day, Wed 26th, is undecanted, so we’ll start that process at 6½pm. Second day, Thu 27th, is decanted, so 7pm? But will we have enough bottles for two days? We have:
  1. Warre 1985 (JDAW);
  2. Ramos Pinto 1985 (JDAW);
  3. Graham 1985 (RSH adopting);
  4. Dow 1985 (FF possibly adopting);
  5. Infantado 1985 (JG);
  6. Offley Boa Vista 1968 (JG);
  7. Taylor 1985 (ED).
Seven bottles five ways works for one night, just, but not for two.

How about I add an Andresen 1985 for day 2?

Andresen 1985?

Terrible.
Maybe your bottle will be better. So let’s say yes.

How will we get your T85 for day 1? Or is that also day 2 only?

Jay is adopting the Infantado 85
I'm bringing the dow 85 and the Offley 68 regardless.

I've got a bottle of Dows 85 all lined up for Christmas Night. But as your trying one on the 26th, I'm going to hold fire, and assess your TN on it. If you say it's good and behaving, I'll have mine now on New Years Eve, if you are lukewarm or critical, I'll jump ship. Fingers Crossed.

Hope you have fun.

Alan.

It does seem that New York is the place to be for community port consumption over Christmas and the New Year.

Enjoy both the emergency tasting and the Colheita-thon chaps.
