Virtual Tasting #8 - Tuesday 30th June?

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Hopefully this date will suit Mike and he will be happy to host us on his Zoom account again, but this is as much a placeholder as a firm arrangements.

Anyone who would like to take part in a proper online tasting please send me an email with your address and I will send you a sample bottle containing some Port planned to arrive a day or two before 30th June. Those who sent me their addresses on Tuesday do not need to do so again but anyone else who would like to take part, please do as this list will act as my checklist.

I'll ask for a contribution to cover the costs of postage, which I estimate will be about £5 in the UK or $10 outside the UK.

People (and whether they have asked to be sent a sample bottle - Tony is the only person who wants to take part in the Zoom call but hasn't said he'd like a sample; I will assume he does for the purposes of admin):
  1. AHB - Y - received

Charles, Zak, Neil, Glenn - thank you, emails received

Julian - you are a pain, but I have emailed myself with the details from your PM. Please, no-one else PM on this topic but email instead (using the email link on TPF is fine)

Simon - I'm sure I do, but please send me an email with your address since I intend to use the emails as my checklist to make sure I don't miss anyone out where they have said they want to be included

This will be fun, and it will be interesting to see how a small sample bottle holds up to trans-Atlantic shipping!

It seems we have 17 people who would like a sample sent to them. Be prepared for small samples!

I'm nearing the end of my young LBV tasting horizontal-ish (give or take 2 years) . Will likely open a Fonseca 2014 LBV.

I am vacillating between a Kopke Colheita 1977 and a Churchill 1982. Either of them will have to really outperform to come close to last week's C&B bottling of Warre 1970.

Recently acquired a case of Noval 1985. Think the time has come for the first bottle to be sacrificed on the altar of the vinous gods.

Samples should be arriving from today. When they arrive, please pop them in the fridge until Tuesday and remove shortly before we get together. They should be tasted at about 14-16C.

Looks like this could be a relatively simple thing to replicate...

To enable replication I have been waiting for Ampulla to reopen their online shop which has now happened. All, are these the most appropriate containers for samples?

My sample labelled Noval National 1963 has arrived safely too thank you. The fun of not being blind is more than negates by the chance of such fine Port. Doffs hat in thanks.

Just spotted that your post earned you the somewhat ephemeral rank of "Cruz Tawny". Well done!

There arrived yesterday my Port, labelled “Dow 1878”. Fantastic, thank you. Looking very dark for its age, perhaps reminiscent of the Mk55. Please do send a picture of the cork and bottle.
