I haven't seen a post from him in this thread for a while.
You bet I'm attending! I'm making a trip to Rhode Island to pick up the Nacional this weekend.

Have we set a time yet? 6 PM, I assume?

If they have any more of the RP85 at ┰¤$30 a bottle, I’ll take a few cases.

Ooh, those are good prices! I don't know if I will have a chance to go there, as I'm not staying long and am at the mercy of my hosts, but I'd definitely like to try to pick up some of the Ferreira if I can!

Eric, that is a great idea as I am going to propose both a 1980 horizontal and a Ferreira vertical and I don't have the 1980.

I don't see a confirmation that differentdave is attending or a confirmation that someone is adopting the 83 Dow from me.

It would help the planning if these issues could be straightened out.

Is this where we're at?
Port, finalized:
  • Fonseca:
    • 1983 Jeff;
    • 1985 Jeff;
  • Gould Campbell:
    • 1983 Jay;
    • 1985 Jay;
  • Nacional:
    • 1983 Eric;
    • 1985 JDAW.
Port, the adoption/attendance zone:
  • Dow:
    • 1983 Jay (Needs Adopter);
    • 1985 SushiNorth;
  • Graham:
    • 1983 To be adopted by TBird;
    • 1985 JDAW (Needs Adopter?);
I'd propose a DEADLINE of tuesday evening for anyone who wants to adopt and confirm attendance (I'd count tbird as confirmed, based on his frequent attention to this thread) -- at which point we sort out what's left and consolidate houses so that we don't have two with adoptions pending.

Oh yeah... got a little overeager about 85 approaching, popped a Warre's 85 for the storm, just to get warmed up :D I'll post tasting notes as soon as i retrieve them.

I count two bottles for adoption and three folks coming without a bottle: Subir, Molly and differentdave. My suggestion is that whoever does not adopt a bottle put in $90.00 towards the two Nacionals.

Damn..I need to pay more attention here! I thought this horizontal was called off.. :crying: I would have tried to attend.

On another note ..be careful about the wine at Vickers in RI, I raided them several years ago and managed to get some decent stuff but it is all stored at super hot temperatures. Most of the Port sits around in the store baking. I picked up several bottles from the store shelves which were baked! I had better luck with the cases of 85 Ramos and 80 & 85 Ferreira (stored in the basement). I left the 1982's.. they are probably okay. The 1966 Sandeman is no good ..all of the bottles stored downstairs are not refrigerated at all so it's a total crap shoot ... in the summer that store is hot!

If adopting a bottle or space becomes an issue I can bow out (which would be slightly odd cause at one point in time I was hosting this event)
Sorry for confusion and headaches guys.

No confusion, 10 bottles, 11 people is perfect, can you chip in for the Noval nacional? Especially since Steph is probably going to be driving a few of us home.

Would make the average price about 90$/person

Port, finalized:

* Fonseca:
o 1983 Jeff;
o 1985 Jeff;
* Gould Campbell:
o 1983 Jay;
o 1985 Jay;
* Nacional:
o 1983 Eric; -- Dave can you help chip in for this?
o 1985 JDAW.

Port, the adoption/attendance zone:

* Dow:
o 1983 Subir;
o 1985 SushiNorth;
* Graham:
o 1983 To be adopted by TBird;
o 1985 Molly;

Also, would any of mind if I bring brown paper bags for a blind before we start taking notes?

I have better than bags. But I prefer sighted: put aside your prejudice and judge the contents of the glass.

Well, how about a compromise... Can we label the bottles A/B/C/D etc, and Jdaw, when you make the placemats can you include letters on them (DOW 1985 (F) )? Those who want to taste blind can do so with letters for their glasses, those who want to know what's what need only use their placemat.

I think really the only concern is that, with 11 people, there'll only be a glass a piece so those tasting blind may not realize they're drinking the nacional til its too late!

If we do it blind, we can do better than that. I have labelled bags—courtesy of DRT.

But it is a team decision. Team: vote.
  • Sighted: JDAW;
  • Blind: SushiNorth, g-man.
If we do it blind, somebody (probably Mrs Facciol) will put bottles in bags. We’ll taste. When everybody has sampled and guessed, we’ll reveal. Then there can be further tasting, sighted. Then food.
