I also vote for Friday night, although, in a pinch, I might be able to do Wednesday night.

I'm going to make every effort to attend once we have settled on a date. My wife wants to go to New York to see Spamalot again, so we're going to make it a weekend and have some fun. :D

I don't believe I have anything that qualifies as "old" or "odd" though, so I may have to adopt. Is there a formal definition of "odd" so that I can check? (My cellar almost certainly doesn't qualify for "old" as the oldest bottle I have is a 375 of the 1957 Kopke Colheita.)

Is this date now firm? Friday, November 7th?

If so, my wife and I are going to purchase tickets to New York so that I can attend on Friday night and we can go to a show on Saturday night.

Where is this being held? I have access to an apartment in Manhattan - will that be good enough or should I try to get a hotel closer to the event location?

Friday 7th is definite - or at least as definite as I can ever make anything when I have to travel subject to the demands of work.

My preference would be for the tasting to be mid-town or downtown to allow me to stay conveniently in either the Millennium Hilton or the New York Hilton at 52nd and Sixth.

Re-posting:

My wife and I have purchased tickets to New York and so I'll be able to attend on Friday, November 7th!

We arrive in Newark at about 3:00 which should allow plenty of time to get to the apartment we will be using in Manhattan and then on to the tasting, wherever that ends up being.

Has anyone scared up a place in midtown? If not and if Alex can trek to Brooklyn, I am offering my home again.

Brooklyn would work for me - I should be able to remember the way from the subway station this time!

I'll be using some sort of public transport - most likely a taxi - so Brooklyn is fine with me.

If you guys would like, I have that molly dooker tasting tonight at Nick and Stef's

I think they're a pretty good venue and I was thinking about asking them if they'd be interested in hosting us.

If you guys are around can I get a roll count of people. I would ask for a reservation of 10.

Confirmed so far:

Glenn - 1
Julian - 1
Jay - 1
Jeff - 1 (maybe 2)
Alex - 1
Tbird - 1
Eric D. - 1

Not Sure
Sean C. -?

Location - Either Nick n Stef's or Jay's awesome apartment in Brooklyn, in which case we'll order out again.

Wines present:

* 1873 Schofield (FF);
* 1896 Garcia (AHB);
* 1932 Butler Nephew (ED);
* 1947 Barros (JDAW);
* 1952 Barros (JDAW);
* 1938 Hooper (JDAW);
* 1942 Hooper (JDAW); -- Glenn E. Adopting.
* 1944 Hooper (JG).

I just saw this,

Nick & Stef's Steakhouse
9 Penn Plaza, New York, NY 10001

Corkage Fee: 0

Join us for BYOB Friday and Saturdays Through August @ Nick & Stef's Steakhouse! Check out http://www.patinagroup.com for other exciting events!

I'll confirm tonight if this is still true.

If it is, I'd like to recommend this restaurant for our tasting.

Correction on number for me - my wife is not a Port drinker, so I'll be the only one attending the tasting. She is coming with me to New York so that she can drag me to Spamalot on Saturday night. :lol:

If there is no corkage and the steak is good, the restaurant works for me.

The steak is good, as are their sides =) ...
but I agree, if there's corkage, I wouldn't want to get hit with 300$ (assuming 30$ / bottle standard)

Otherwise, I'm happy to have a trek to brooklyn too.

glenn, are you going to spamalot after the tasting? or is it a separate day?

Hahaha... no, we're going to Spamalot on Saturday night. However, I will still be performing a feat of sorts - flying for 7 hours and getting pre-dehydrated before going to a Port tasting! I'm think I'm going to need extra water for this one...

And just to make it official, I will be adopting one of JDAW's bottles that he has so kindly offered up. Being a fan of WWII games & such, and having never tasted a Hoopers, I will lay claim to the 1942 Hoopers. Though the 1947 Barros was also tempting!

Alrighty. Here's the deal. The general manager, Jennifer, says she would either cut the corkage in half, so it's 12.50$ a bottle or if we order something(s) of equal value (of the corkage) on the WINE menu, she would wave the corkage for us.

I have a tentative reservation for 10 at 7:30pm.

Let me know what you guys want to do. I'll tally up the votes.

Edited for clairification.

That's... a lot of steak! But being raised in Nebraska, I'm up to the challenge. BRING ON THE RED MEAT!
