This thread is to host announcements of tastings, samplings, trials, and such-like promotions held by retailers, off-licences, and even auction houses. But this not for events requiring :tpf: to arrange or organise.

The Sampler’s not too far away from me. It’s a great independent wine-merchant (with an interesting selection of Port), though I don’t get the opportunity to visit it very frequently.

We had such a great time at the last one we couldn’t wait a whole year!

The BYO is back this June! Those of you who came last December saw an incredible display of generosity, hedonism and a bit of excess! Come join us, and up to 120 other wine lovers, at Tribeca Grill one more with gems from your cellar. We will seat in tables of ten according to the caliber of wine you bring and regulate a certain minimum standard, so no worries! After a bit, everyone shares around the room and it becomes a real free for all, and a heck of a party! The sky is the limit for the amount of extraordinary wines you will have a chance to sample! This dinner includes a four-course meal in Tribeca Grill’s private room. Don’t miss one of the greatest wine experiences of the year and a memory that will last a lifetime.

$135 per person plus tax and gratuity

Please reserve early as this is always a very popular event and likely to sell out

Thank you!

We have barrel samples from many of the major Port Houses and would like to offer you the rare opportunity to try these young Ports at this early stage in their life (and pre-order some, if you wish!).

2011 is certainly looking to be a classic with all the major houses declaring. The wines are characterised as having great intensity, depth and purity. Deep in colour and fruit these wines will age extremely well, but in the more modern tradition provide pleasure at an early age too.

Philip at the Smokehouse wine counter has a superb new selection from a select vinyard in Portugal. He’s very excited about them, and would be pleased to explain how he has found them, especially for the Cheshire Smokehouse. They include four wines from Herdade Sao Miguel, a family owned vineyard in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal.

Tiago, a member of the family will be in the shop to promote his wines at this tasting:

Ciconia Tinto

Ciconia Branco

Herdade Sao Miguel Tinto

Herdade Sao Miguel Branco

Do call in to try them on 13th, you’d be most welcome, and we think you will really enjoy learning about these wines new to The Cheshire Smokehouse! let alone tasting them!

The Sampler in Islington and South Kensington appears to have jumped on the 2011 bandwagon this week...

This week we are doing a fascinating tasting of 8 different ports from the recently released 2011 vintage. If you haven’t already heard, this vintage looks to be fantastic, so we thought it might be fun to be able to compare and contrast some of the best ports side by side. These are hard to taste so young, but you can get a feel for the differences in style of each wine. We are actually going to have a machine in South Ken doing the same thing, so it doesn’t matter which shop you come to.

On tasting:

Grahams £240 per 6 in bond
Dows £235 per 6 in bond
Warres £200 per 6 in bond (or 12 halves)
Cockburn £186 per 6 in bond
Smith Woodhouse £165 per 6 in bond
Ferreira £220 per 6 in bond
Offley Boa Vista £190 per 6 in bond
Sandeman £212 per 6 in bond

I thought G meant "galoots", in which case the pricing makes sense.

There was a ruling from the European Court of Justice in 2012, which stated that insurers could not take gender into account when calculating car insurance premiums. The norm until then was that female drivers paid lower premiums than their male counterparts as they are statistically less prone to flip the car over into a ditch every 60 seconds.

Thus if you go as a hetero couple, insist on paying 64.50 each! Alternatively, to make the most of the gender discount; cross-dress.

Well this is handy to know! I live around the corner from Corks of North Street so I can pick up tickets if anyone else is interested. I shall pop in and see if they have any further details around the balance of table wines vs ports.
