Emergency tasting for this friday (the first night I'm free) to see if Gould Campbell 1980 is any good. We'll be in NYC, and I am tempted to try for Didier's La Sirene again (no corkage).

All the bottles arrived with good fill (mid/high neck) but one which is just at the bottom. There's another with a scary looking capsule and a much lower tax stamp number than the rest. I'm debating whether to open one of those two, or to pick one of the better looking bottles so that we are assured a good representation of the wine.

Julian -- I appreciate the offer of placemats, but with only one port presently planned, it may not be necessary.

All: Who can attend? Any comments on venue?

Where is it taking place? I am working in 2 different locations on Fri but might be able to depending on where you are holding it.

Lol, the placemats are great. I'm going to save the pdf on a thumbdrive and leave it in their crate :) Am calling to make reserves at La Sirene, with the understanding that they won't be able to give us more than a typical dinner slot. If this is OK, let's pick a time -- say, 7pm? As we have one primary bottle between the three of us, we should be fine. The GC won't arrive 100% full, i'll be checking it during the day and putting a bottle aside to check saturday night.

btw, there are 2-3 cases of this stuff left at the source, so if we like it, we can make plans :)

Josh, please count me in. Eric D. called and mentioned he would be coming as well. Are we bringing stuff in or can I adopt/chip in?

Please add 2 more to the reservation.

Let us know. I'll check in later.

I just noticed I have a bit of an oddity: a Messias 1980 Colheita. Would you guys rather try the Niepoort Passadouro 95 or the Messias 80 Colheita? The Messias might fit with the 'curiousities' theme that seems to be developing here.

Well, for that matter I have a 1995 Roriz. So I'm going to completely forget about the Messias Colheita and propose we try GC 80 and 97, Roriz 95 and 97, the 75 oddity and the pre-war oddity. How does that sound to everybody?

i know i should decant for sediment, but any suggestions on further decanting? will sediment decanting be sufficient?

My mistake. I'm very curious to try them, as I also have never had a Roriz. I will be decanting mine before I leave for class, probably around 10 or 11 am tomorrow.

I look forward to seeing you all. From what I saw on the restaurant website, they are cash only and they add 20% automatically for the gratuity. I am glad there is no corkage fee. They certainly will deserve the 20% tip and since there is no corkage fee, I think we are getting good value.

Holy cow! TPF apparently stopped informing me there were updates to this thread, and look how its ballooned!

Ok, so problem #1 -- La Sirene did not pick up the phone when I called, nor did they return my call. As such, we have no reservations there at the moment. I will spend tomorrow morning finding us an alternative venue.

problem #2 -- that's a lot of port! I've got to drive to cape cod the following morning! If anyone would prefer not to bring port and pay a larger share of the food bill, they are welcome.

OK, so after a long search I can only conclude there aren't any reasonable byo places left. Not really. Anyway, tomorrow morning I'll try La Sirene again, and if that doesn't work, i'm calling these in order. If you have a suggestion, please let me know asap. I'll PM my phone number to everyone in case you don't hear the location and lose access to TPF. Julian -- yes we'll be in need of glasses, tnx. timing: assume 6:30 at the earliest.

The Pink Tea Cup (soulfood)
Kamui Den (japanese kitchen)
Tai Thai (duh)
Spice (thai)
Nori (sushi)
Cube 63 (trendy sushi)
Milon (Indian -- the crazy xmas light place on 1st ave)
Sigiri (Indian, near Milon)

Sadly, I'm going to pass on these:
Ivo & Lulu -- too small
Tartine -- too small
Himalayan Cafe -- too small
I'm tempted to just skip on La Sirene given how tiny it is, but i'll give them one shot to come through. The other too-small places above are either REALLY too small, or are cramped with impatient and rude staff.
