March 22nd appears free in my diary at the moment. I'm interested and will offer the bottles I have available by PM when requested to do so.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Just checked the german source of the Malvedos 79. Price is for halfe bottles. Do you think it is worth buying two of them? Opinions, please.

DrDirk, I think there's likely to be quite a bit of adoption for this tasting, so I don't think a lack of a bottle at this point will be a problem. Could you reconfirm for the 22nd?

It is for me and, I assume, BenR. I will amend accordingly. I hope DRT will still be willing even though it is only just within seven days of the 28th...

If we are unlikely to find the Malvedos 1979 somewhere else, it might be worth getting them, even in half-bottles.

Great stuff. First post amended accordingly. Assuming that Axel had a sensible reason for the limits he has imposed at his tastings, I think we're probably looking for about 6-or-so more participants.

Done.

Questions: should the ’61 be purchased? Should an honoured guest be invited? (And what about the ’12?)

My ‟+1” if he accepts is an honoured guest, though nothing to do with the Symingtons.

I've rather overlooked this thread, but I should be back in Blighty by this date..

I can't offer much help filling the identified gaps in the lineup, although I would note that the Malvedos '57 appears to have been marketed as a Crusted port, and gets listed from time to time.

What I could add is the Graham '42.. ex stock.. (and can probably mitigate the cost of some less scarce players)

- Room for a little 'un?

Excellent. I’ve added you to the list of attendees and the ’42 to the list of possible Ports. 88)

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any Graham’s Crusted available, retail, from anything older than the 1990s. But we should keep our eyes on the auctions in case any turn up between now and then.

For anyone reading this post, we now have 3-ish spaces left. If you would like to attend please either reply or contact me by private message. Don’t be shy!

Hi Jacob,

After careful consideration I am afraid to say I have to drop out of this tasting for personal reasons. This is sad but unfortunately unavoidable. :cry:

Thanks particularly to the help of Derek, this tasting is now beginning to come together.

The proposed final line-up of Ports is the following:

1. 1957 Malvedos
2. 1958 Malvedos
3. 1962 Malvedos
4. 1964 Malvedos
5. 1965 Malvedos
6. 1966 Graham
7. 1968 Malvedos
8. 1970 Graham
9. 1976 Malvedos
10. 1978 Malvedos
11. 1979 Malvedos
12. 1982 Malvedos
13. 1984 Malvedos
14. 1985 Graham
15. 1986 Malvedos
16. 1987 Malvedos
17. 1988 Malvedos
18. 1990 Malvedos

As the number of wines from Quinta dos Malvedos has increased, it seemed sensible to reduce the number of Graham VPs to one from each decade we are seriously surveying. They should provide interesting waypoints throughout the vintages.

There are currently two spaces left on this tasting. If you would like to attend, please reply here or contact me.

Jacob (, Derek),

thanks a lot for the organisation. If there is anything I can contribute, please let me know.

Are you planning to have my Malvedos 79 included or do you have seperate ones? I would be more than happy to bring mine to the tasting, although they are 2 half bottles.

Sessions of eight and ten ports need to be sub-divided into flights. A possibility is:
  • Before dinner
    • ’57 ’58;
    • ’62 ’64 ’65 ’66;
    • ’68 ’70.
  • After dinner
    • ’76 ’78’ 79 ’82;
    • ’84 ’85 ’86
    • ’87 ’88 ’90.
Any disagreements?

If that’s OK, should the first session’s middle flight be on one page, even though that forces a slight disordering of the glasses? (Because the first session’s other page would hold ’57 ’58 and ’68 ’70.)

Yes, please; I think it might be fun to see how two halves compare to the regular 78.

Once everything is settled (hopefully soon), I will contact everyone attending to discuss finances.

Julian: can't we use A3 paper and so have the pre/post dinner selections on one sheet?
