This tasting's theme is to be port from every decade (60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's)

Here's the situation:
We have a reservation at 8:30 at Square Meal for Friday the 30th of October. The reservation is for 6 people, which is the maximum party size they will seat.

Here are the attendees, with details on what they are bringing and number of people. These are listed in the order people replied on this thread:
1: Jeff - Martinez 63
1: TBird - Croft 85
2: Josh+Y.H. - Sandeman 70
1: DoubleD - Warre's 2000
1: JohnInNYC - Quinta do Noval Silval 1995

(size maximum problems have been solved, and we are at capacity.)
(Glasses: We have enough glasses for 6 people drinking 5 ports.)

One other thought -- they did have a second seating at 8:30; if we stay with sq meal we might want that because, though it's late, we tend to run late.

Steph most likely won't make it.
So I'll be flying solo, the 8:30 is better because we do run late.

Everyone else please post time preferences.

I prefer 8:30 so I can go home change, predecant the bottle and drive out.
But am happy to go with the group on this.

8:30 is better since the restaurant is less likely going to make us get up and leave after 2 hours as they would do to the 6:30 people. Plus, we want to relax as we have Port. What are we gonna do on the street at 8:30 at night????

I procured a 2000 bottle from Sushi North. 8:30 is fine for me. I will be going solo as well so I believe we have an open spot for a reservation for 6. BTW, let's try to get there between 8 and 8:30. The restaurant does start to close after 10:30 so it's not like we can kick back and take our time. If the restaurant doesn't fill the 6:30 reservation for our table, they will just leave it open.

Good thinking DOubleD. We can arrive somewhat earlier like at 8 because, as you say, if the table is ready, they certainly would let us sit there. If not all of us arrive until 830, we can start out with drinks. We can even gossip about whoever has not arrived yet! Yippy!!!!! Ha ha. just kidding. And yes, I too am adopting a 90's Port from Sushi. I'm too lazy to look to see if I already stated that.
Cheers to all!

Back from TX! I am going to ruin the surprise, the lineup is now
Martinez 1963
Sandeman 1970
Croft 1985
Quinta da Noval Silval 1995
Warres 2000

Thus, we have covered the past 5 decades of port. We also only have 5 attendees. I'll see if we can find someone willing to bring a bottle from the 50's ;)
I'll call the restaurant today and ask about 8:30.

Warning! Pedantry follows. Feel free to ignore. ;)

Technically, you have only covered 3 of the past 5 decades. You've covered the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s. But those aren't decades.

Despite all the partying, the 2nd millenium did not end at midnight on December 31st, 1999. It ended at midnight on December 31st, 2000. There was no reason to party like it was 1999 because that was just any old arbitrary year. Prince was wrong. I know, I know, hard to believe.

Decades and centuries work the same way. The 97th decade of the 2nd millenium (or if you prefer the 7th decade of the 20th century) started on January 1st, 1961 and ended on December 31st, 1970. So your '63 and your '70 are from the same decade. The 100th decade of the 2nd millenium (or the 10th decade of the 20th century) started on January 1st, 1991 and ended on December 31st, 2000. So your '95 and '00 are also from the same decade.

Odd? Not really. When the various calendars were created, the concept of 0 as a number didn't exist. So the first year was rightfully labeled 1, the second 2, etc, and the tenth 10. The first decade was the years 1 through 10. The rest derives from that start.

Carry on. ;)

Or alternatively, we span 38 years (2000-1963+1), thus covering most of four decades ;)

Is this the moment for my rant about Pope Gregory’s incorrect correction of the calendar?

Decant times!
I'm handling decanting for three of the bottles, suggestions?
Sandeman 1970 - 6 hours; will open at 2pm.
Quinta do Noval Silval 1995 - a long decant might be just right, thoughts?
Warres 2000 - Pop-n-pour (i.e. 1-2 hr decant)? 24 hrs? What the heck do we do with something this young, but just entering a closed phase?

I think I read on this forum somewhere the 95s might be early approachers, but not sure.

For the fonseca 00, it tasted best popped and poured or 30 hours later. never had teh warres though, but if it's like, then i'd probably go with pop and pour.

I'm going to pop and pour the Mt 63.
